Wicked Wind Ride – May 15, 2011

Today Deb and I rode the Wicked Wind ride.  This is an annual event put on by the Oz Bicycle Club of Wichita, KS.  They offer a 25, 50, and 100 mile route.  We signed up for the 50 mile route, but thought we might opt for the 25 due to the weather conditions.  We decided at the last minute that we’d go ahead and ride the 50 despite the winds.  It was about 40 degrees when we started and it made it to almost 60 by the time we finished.  The Wicked Wind lived up to its name today with 30 mph gusts which made for some tough riding conditions.  The route took us from Lake Afton to Clearwater, Conway Springs, Viola, and then back to Lake Afton.  The route had nice smooth roads, little traffic, and just a few gentle hills. The Oz Club does a great job on this ride, providing SAGs, mechanical support, and lunch afterwards.  This year’s ride had approximately 440 participants.
