I made the long drive home today. I considered my trip a success and really enjoyed the town of Fruita and biking the trails in this area. In the span of 18 years Fruita has grown to a world class mountain biking destination. In 1995, Over The Edge Sports opened its doors and began to promote biking in the area. Locals began building trails on BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land and by the next year held the first Fruita Fat Tire Festival. Fruita now graces the pages of many biking magazines and draws riders from all over the world. The New York Times described it with the headline “Where Mountain Bikers Carved Their Dreams”. According to BLM counts, there are now over 100,000 people riding in Fruita each year. I ended up logging nearly 40 miles and 4,800 feet of climbing.
